We aim to offer routine appointments within two working days. If you have an urgent problem that requires immediate attention, a doctor can see you the same day providing you ring the surgery before 10:30am; you will then be offered an appointment time to be seen by the duty doctor. THIS IS STRICTLY FOR URGENT/ON THE DAY PROBLEMS ONLY.  We will try to see you at your appointed time but there may be times when a wait will be necessary depending on demand. Please note the GP surgery does not start until 09:30am on the last Thursday of the month.

If you find you no longer need an appointment you have arranged please be sure to let us know as soon as possible to allow the time to be available for some one else.

The practice uses an electronic display board to call you for your appointment, and if you have trouble reading the display, or hearing the bell indicating an appointment has been called, please let the reception staff know, and you will be called by an alternative means. Please be sure to check into reception, preferably at the Automated Arrivals Console, when you arrive for an appointment. Apart from letting us know who is in the building in the event of an emergency, it also ensures that your doctor knows you have arrived and are ready to be seen.

APPOINTMENTS IN THE TREATMENT ROOM
Hilary Taylor – Lead Practice nurse
Clare Jaques – Practice nurse
Cora Best – Healthcare Assistant
Penny Scott – Phlebotomist
Donna Knight – Phlebotomist

As well as general nursing duties, e.g. dressings, injections, ear syringing, Hilary and Clare run clinics for chronic disease management; diabetes, vascular and respiratory reviews, where they undertake the routine care and annual reviews for these conditions.
They also offer the following services:
Family planning advice for both pill checks and injectable contraception
HRT and osteoporosis advice
Cervical smears
Well person checks
Foreign travel advice and vaccinations
Baby immunisations

Hilary, Clare and Cora can do your blood pressure review, and Hilary and Clare can give dietary and weight loss, and cholesterol advice.

The Phlebotomy Service is a busy one available in the mornings only, and we aim to do as many “in-house” blood tests as we can, but you may have to wait two to three weeks for a routine blood test, or if you wish you can go to Poole Hospital (01202 448087) and have your blood taken there. It is necessary to ring for an appointment first.

TELEPHONE ADVICE
Sometimes it is more convenient and simpler to have a discussion over the telephone rather than book an appointment. If you would like to speak to a doctor or nurse for advice then telephone 01929 553444. The best time to phone is after 11.30am as the phones are less busy, and the doctors and nurses will be finishing their morning surgeries. If the doctor or nurse cannot speak to you directly please leave a message with the receptionist who answers your call, including any times when you won’t be available to take a return call. The doctor or nurse will return your call when they are free. If your question needs an urgent reply a doctor or nurse will be able to advise you more quickly. In an emergency, it would be better to request assistance from the ambulance service by dialling 999.  Remember that the surgery can’t discuss issues relating to the health of others without their specific consent.

Our telephone picking list:
Please dial 01929 553444 and listen to the menu, if you know which option you require (see list below) you may select that option at any time.
1             To make an appointment or request a visit
2             To cancel an appointment
3             For information on how to order a repeat prescription
4             For results (after 11.30am)
5             For travel advice
6             To leave a message for a doctor or Practice nurse
7             For any other enquiries

Please note there is a very important reason for having a non-geographic number (0845) and that is for Disaster Recovery. In the event of a loss of telephone line services at the surgery our telephone provider can redirect our incoming calls to another telephone number with two hours notice, thus enabling us to continue to provide our service. For information on call costs click here

HOME VISITS
Home visits are normally for those who are housebound. Home visits can be requested for the same day, if they are requested by 10.30am, by telephoning 01929 553444. Please state why you need a visit to help us work out who will need to be seen more urgently during the day. Please also give your address and telephone number.  Visits are made at the doctor's discretion on grounds of clinical needand you may be offered an appointment at the surgery if the doctor feels this is more appropriate. Lack of transport is not a reason for a home visit.

OUT OF HOURS
Between 1.00pm and 2.00pm, 6.30pm and 8.30am and during weekends and bank holidays, the surgery is closed. If you telephone between 1.00pm and 2.00pm, you will hear a recorded message telling you how to seek emergency help. At other times, you will be given the telephone number of the Dorset Emergency Care Service which covers emergency treatment during these times. You can telephone them directly on 0845 600 1013. You can also contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647 at any time for advice.

The out of hours arrangements are the responsibility of Dorset Primary Care Trust, and will not involve the surgery. Any comments or complaints about the out of hours service provided by the Primary Care Trust should be directed to Mr Paul Sly, Chief Executive, Dorset Primary Care Trust.

TEACHING
The practice teaches 5th-year medical students from Southampton University who are sometimes present during surgeries. If you would rather not have any student present during a consultation, please let us know and we will observe your wishes. This will not in any way adversely influence your care, and we would prefer you to tell us if you feel uncomfortable about students being present.

LOCUMS
It is not always possible for our doctors to cover all surgeries and we may occasionally need to call in the services of a locum doctor. They will always be fully qualified and they will have access to all your medical information.

HOSPITAL REFERRALS
If your doctor decides that you need to be referred to hospital to see a consultant, you will probably be referred via a system called Choose and Book. The doctor will select the service you require and give you a choice, where available, of different hospitals to attend. You will then be given a printed sheet to enable you to book an appointment at your convenience via the telephone or on-line.
